The Church

We will be ‘Welcoming a Joyful Christmas’ on Christmas Eve, 24th December at 8.30pm – come from 8pm for mulled cider and a mince pie.

This service will be candle lit, so please consider bring a small torch if you would find that useful.

Our picturesque village church of St Mary & St John, Lamyatt is part of the Alham Vale benefice.

Services are held twice a month – currently at 11am on the first Sunday of the month a Worship for All service, and at 11am on the third Sunday a communion service.  Up-to-date information on services can be found, along with additional information, on  Lamyatt ‘A Church Near You’.

Well attended Christmas, Easter, and Harvest services are held, encouraging community participation, and the Church has also hosted pet services and Lammas celebrations—marking the first bread of the new harvest.  This service is held in a village barn with hay bale seating and is followed by bread, cheese, and cider.

The church is open daily throughout the year during daylight hours. It features a large collage created by residents in the 1990s to commemorate the 50th anniversary of VE Day and postcards are available.  Memorial plaques to the Guyon family, who served in the 19th century, and a 1907 stained glass window of St Christopher donated by local benefactor Christopher Welch, and a wooden carving of the same saint, can also be found. On the tower’s exterior, two carved heads are believed to represent St Mary and St John, the church’s patron saints. Inclusive and welcoming. The church has also hosted several weddings in recent years. For more information, please contact a member of the Parochial Church Council (PCC):

  1. This is a lovely friendly website! Your information about your beautiful church is very inviting. I have stumbled across is whilst doing some research into the life of one of your 19th century rectors and hope to visit personally soon. It is good to know that the church is open to visitors during the day, thank you for that information.

    • Thank you for your lovely comments! It’s always great to have feedback. Do you mind me asking which rector it is that you are researching? I am always interested in the history of our church and village. Jen

    • Thank you for your kind appreciation. We hope to welcome you one day to Lamyatt and our lovely church, and to see the results of your research.
